The Med-1000 trustees appointed by Kroger and UFCW Local 1000 are committed to improving the benefits that you earn and deserve. We are partnering with experts in the field with decades of experience in negotiating fair prices for paying hospitals, surgery centers, outpatient facilities and dialysis clinics, which greatly reduces medical costs. For inpatient and outpatient services, we will allow you the freedom to choose almost any facility. You will also have access to a broad network of physicians and ancillary providers. The Med-1000 Trustees have assembled a team of expert partners to deliver your smart-care benefits.
HMC HealthWorks
Utilization Management / Utilization Review
- The smart-care benefit designs will include precertification and prior authorization provided by HMC HealthWorks, a company with 40 years of experience ensuring patients are receiving medically necessary and appropriate care.
HealthSmart
The HealthSmart Network provides access to a national network of high quality, credentialed healthcare providers, which includes primary care doctors, radiologists, pediatricians, cardiologists, oncologists, gynecologists and many other specialties to meet your specific healthcare needs.
- The smart-care benefit design will now include HealthSmart's network of Professional care providers. HealthSmart will replace UnitedHealthcare as the network for physician care. The vast majority of Med-1000 participants will find their doctors are still in-network with HealthSmart. Click here to see if your doctor still is in-network. Select the "HealthSmart Physician/Ancillary Only" network from the dropdown list.
HST
Experts in negotiating fair prices for providers of Facility care, such as hospitals, surgery centers, outpatient centers and dialysis clinics.
- The smart-care benefit designs will include freedom of choice for facility care, while reducing your out of pocket costs. You will no longer need to use UnitedHealthcare providers for hospital and facility care. Med-1000 is partnering with HST, a company with over a decade of experience in negotiating fair prices for paying hospitals, surgery centers, outpatient facilities and dialysis clinics.

Administrative Manager
- The smart-care benefit designs will be administered by NEBA, Med-1000's trusted partner since 1996. NEBA will continue to process your claims and serve as the Administrative Manager for the Med-1000 Health & Welfare Plan.

Why did we choose to make this change?
We believe that this change will help reduce your out-of-pocket healthcare expenses and bring stability to your health and welfare fund.
What will change about the redesigned smart-care plan?
The redesigned smart-care plan will work differently for Facility (hospital) claims and will work much the same as it does today for Professional (doctor) claims.
What is considered a Facility claim?
Hospitals, surgical centers, outpatient centers, dialysis clinics, and other similar locations are considered Facilities. If you have a question as to whether your service is considered a Facility-based service, reach out to Rightway at (866) 817-6278.
What is considered a Professional claim?
Professionals include individuals that provide your medical care, like primary care doctors, radiologists, pediatricians, cardiologists, oncologists and gynecologists. If you have a question as to whether your service is considered a Professional service, reach out to Rightway at (866) 817-6278.
How will I choose a Facility?
Rightway can assist you in finding a Facility that is high quality and that works well with your redesigned smart-care plan to ensure you receive your services at a reasonable cost to you.
Is there anything that I need to do in advance of my Facility appointment?
We recommend that you contact Rightway in advance of your appointment to ensure that the Facility you are considering meets high quality standards and works well with the smart new benefits under smart-care.
How do I choose a Professional provider?
Rightway can assist you in finding a Professional provider that is high quality and in-network with HealthSmart to ensure you receive your services at a reasonable cost to you.
Is there anything that I need to do in advance of my Professional appointment?
You may wish to consider contacting Rightway in advance of your appointment to ensure that your provider’s network status has not changed, but this is not required.
